How F1 points work

Updated · The Grid Editorial Team

Quick answerThe top 10 finishers in a Grand Prix score points: 25, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1. In a Sprint, the top eight score 8 down to 1. Drivers' points count towards the Drivers' Championship, and both drivers' points count towards their team in the Constructors' Championship.

Grand Prix points

Position Points
1st 25
2nd 18
3rd 15
4th 12
5th 10
6th 8
7th 6
8th 4
9th 2
10th 1

Finishing 11th or lower scores nothing. That’s why you’ll hear midfield teams celebrate a P10 like a win. That single point can be worth millions in prize money.

Sprint points

On sprint weekends, the top eight in the Sprint score 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1.

Two championships

Half points

If a race is stopped early and can’t restart, reduced points may be awarded depending on how far the race got. It’s rare, but it happens in heavy rain.

The prediction-game version

Fancy your chances? In The Grid you score for correctly predicting pole, the podium and a wildcard position. It’s simpler than the real thing and much more fun with friends.

FAQ

Is there still a point for the fastest lap?

No. The bonus point for fastest lap was scrapped from the 2025 season.

How are ties in the championship broken?

By the number of wins. If that's equal, by the number of second places, and so on down.

Do drivers get points if they don't finish?

Only if they are classified, meaning they completed at least 90% of the winner's race distance.
